The road linking Urziceni to Bucharest is closed and the only way to carry emergency patients is by helicopter. Romania has drafted in the army to rescue hundreds of travellers stranded by blizzards that dumped up to a metre of snow in 24 hours, derailing a train and forcing authorities to shut down motorways and ports and cancel flights. Police and ambulance crews had rescued 1,300 people by Thursday but another 900 were still stuck in their cars, a spokesman from Romania's emergency services said. Spain's unemployment rate rose to 22.9 percent in the fourth quarter of this year, passing the five million mark, data from the National Statistics Institute showed on Friday, up from 21.5 percent in the previous quarter. The National Statistics Institute said 5.27 million people were out of work at the end of December.
